Nokia cuts 200 R&D jobs in Japan

24.11.2009
Finnish mobile manufacturer Nokia has announced it is to cut some 220 jobs from its R&D operations in Japan as part of its restructuring plan.

The 220 employees represent just over 1pc of Nokia’s R&D workforce, Nokia said.

The company said the cuts were aimed at aligning its R&D activities with its focused portfolio of future products.

Nokia said it will continue its sourcing activities in Japan, and said its Vertu operations in the country, its exclusive line of handcrafted mobile phones for the luxury market, will be unaffected by today’s announcement.

Last week, Nokia announced it was to cut 230 R&D employees at its Oulu site in Finland and approximately R&D 100 employees at its Copenhagen site, adding up to 2pc of its global R&D workforce.

Overall, Nokia has more than 17 000 people employed in its R&D activities.
