A garda has been arrested today under suspicion of disclosing information that led to the resignation of the Green junior minister for state Trevor Sargent.
The garda, who is in her thirties, was arrested at Lucan garda station after she arrived by appointment.
Sargent resigned his position as Minister of State for Food and Horticulture last month.
His resignation came following revelations that he wrote a series of letters to the Gardaí regarding a case being pursued against one of his constituents.
Following the revelations, the Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy ordered an investigation into how the Sargent letters made their way into the public domain.
Sargent accepted during his resignation to the Dail that although his actions in contacting An Garda Siochána in the case were not a criminal offence, under Section 6 of the Prosecutions of Offences Act 1974 such a communication could be deemed not lawful.
