New Dealz stores in Cork and Athlone to create 65 new jobs

Single price discount retailer Poundland is set to open Dealz stores in Cork and Athlone this Thursday, creating 65 new Irish jobs.

The new stores will bring the total number of Dealz outlets in Ireland to eight.

Located on Grand Parade in Cork and measuring over 8,230 sq ft, the new Cork shop will create 35 jobs. And, with a retail space of over 6,630 sq ft, the Athlone store will be located in the Golden Island Shopping Centre Athlone and will create 30 jobs.

Dealz is an integrated part of Poundland and has the same board and management team led by CEO Jim McCarthy, the former managing director of convenience stores at Sainsbury’s.

The new Dealz stores, together with the six already operating in Dublin, Portlaoise, Letterkenny, Killarney, Newbridge and Limerick, are being run by Corkman Leonard Brassel, Dealz senior business manager in Ireland.

“Despite the 2pc VAT increase in Budget 2012 we are fully committed to our €1.49 price point and will continue to offer customers amazing value every day, with even greater value than before,” said Brassel. “We will be maintaining the well-known top brands and essential lines we have in store, as well as continually adding new lines to meet customer’s requirements.”

Dealz offers customers a selection of well-known brands and established own label products for €1.49. Product categories include food & drink, health and beauty, baby, batteries, homeware, pet, books and DVDs, toys, celebrations and seasonal ranges such as Valentines, St Patrick’s Day and Easter.

The chain stocks a number of locally sourced products secured from Irish producers, including Tayto, Brennans Bakery, Dale Farm and Ballagarvey Eggs.

Poundland, which has over 370 stores in the UK, announced its expansion into Republic of Ireland in August 2011. The company said it has been planning a move into Europe for the past year and “chose the Ireland as the first country to benefit from its famous ‘amazing value’ proposition”.
