Michael J Dowling, Chairman, North American Advisory Board

UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School has appointed Michael J Dowling, president and chief executive of the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System, as chairman of the North American Advisory Board.

As CEO of North Shore – LIJ Health System Dowling is responsible for the governance, success and profitability of the US nation's third largest, non profit secular health system with nearly 5,000 beds, a workforce of about 38,000 and revenue in excess of €5 billion.

Before his public service career, Dowling was a professor of social policy and assistant dean at the Fordham University Graduate School of Social Services. He went on to service the New York State government for 12 years in posts such as; State Director of Health, Education and Human Services; Deputy Secretary to the Governor and  Commissioner of the New York State Department of Social Services.

Dowling, who grew up in Limerick, has won a host of awards throughout his career including; the Alfred E. Smith Award from the American Society for Public Administration, the National Human Relations Award from the American Jewish Committee and the Ellis Island Medal of Honour.
